Tears of Joy
Many of our Faith In Action grassroot leaders shed tears of joy with struggling homeowners as some got on-the-spot home loan modifications on Saturday.  Even if they weren't so fortunate, many borrowers left the Hope Now event feeling as though they were moving in the right direction.  For many, just sitting down face-to-face with a lender and non-profit housing counselor was a success.

Victor M. was one of the satisfied borrowers who attended Saturday's HOPE Now event.  A northwest Bakersfield homeowner, Victor became unemployed several months ago.

"I've felt like I've been all alone," the father of five explained, " I've felt like I've had an illness for a long time. When I heard about this event, I felt like I had hope."

Reluctant at first, Victor decided to give the event a shot. Not only did he find some help, he also left feeling inspired. " The volunteers were inspiring, everyone had smiles on their faces, there was team work, and everyone was willing to help, " he said.

Victor left feeling like his issue was a work in progress, " I feel satisfied. I'm no longer masking my negativism, but I really feel like I'm working toward a new phase. I'm not alone."

Three Cheers for our Partners!
Since Faith In Action's major community meeting at St. Joseph's Parish in February 2009, the team of grassroot leaders have partnered with many great partners. We'd like to thank all of our partners: Kern County Housing Authority, HUD Regional Office, Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, Crown Financial Ministries, Kern County Public Health Department, and the United Way of Kern County.

Faith In Action would especially like to celebrate the awesome work of Consumer Credit Counseling Service of Kern and Tulare Counties.  CCCS' expert staff of housing counselors did an amazing job the whole day long. Their expertise and hard work during this major foreclosure crisis has been a real blesisng to our community!

Faith In Action would also like to thank the other HUD-approved non-profit counseling agencies from throughout the state who participated in Bakersfield's HOPE Now event.

Next Steps...
While the HOPE Now Borrower Outreach event was a huge step forward for Kern County, Faith In Action Kern County plans to continue our foreclosure prevention work in the months ahead.

Join Faith In Action in its efforts to keep hardworking families in their homes and neighborhoods stabilized! Our team of grassroot leaders have laid out the following steps forward:

1. Continue to build working relationships with banks and counseling agencies.

Faith In Action will follow up with as many borrowers who attended the June 13th event as possible. We want to know who had their needs met, and who didn't.  We will continue to work with banks to ensure that everything is being done to help families stay in their homes!

2. Combat the local foreclosure "rescue" scams preying on families at risk of foreclosure.

Sadly, we hear from families all the time who fall victim to a growing number of foreclosure scams.  Over the next few months, Faith In Action will work against these vicious schemes through education and action.

3. Improve financial literacy and education of Kern County residents.

Faith In Action Kern County Clergy and Leaders believe that our community will be best served by investing in the long-term improvement of financial literacy and education resources in our community.  We look forward to organizing opportunities for residents to learn about various home loan products, real estate terminology, asset building strategies, and other topics of interest.
