Our latest happenings:

• On May 25th, 2010, over 70 community members Met at United In Christ Ministries with a panel from the Sheriff's Department, Bakersfield Police Department, and California Highway Patrol to discuss issues of crime and safety, and specifically jurisdiction issues.  The event was started with what we hope will create a continued partnership with the Bakersfield Police Department, and California Highway Patrol.

On Saturday morning October 24th, 2009, Faith In Action had a wonderful turnout of 70 concerned members of the community in front of the United In Christ Church.  Adults and children gathered to clean up the neighborhood, picking up trash and painting over graffiti, beautifying the neighborhood around the blocks of Oregon, Quincy, Pacific, and Flower Streets.

• On Thursday October 15th, 2009, over 220 attendees gathered in a Foreclosure Forum at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, which included participants from local, state, and federal agencies, including the FTC, FDIC, San Francisco Federal Reserve Bank, Fannie Mae, and the Kern County Sheriff's Department.  Attendees learned information about the Federal making Home Affordable Program, and measures they can take to protect themselves against foreclosure scams.

October 10th, 2009, 70 parents, students, and concerned residents of Kern County convened to learn and discuss how to help their student achieve academic success.  California State University's President Horace Mitchell gave an informative and motivational speech, which was followed by a workshop where attendees discussed and planned next steps they can take to improve Kern County's academic standing.

Meeting with Kern County Sheriff Donny Youngblood

• Over 100 community members came together for a meeting in March with the Bakersfield Police Chief Bill Rector hosted by the Faith In Action ministry of Compassion Christian Center.

• In June, Faith In Action, the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, and the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development hosted a mortgage borrower outreach event conducted by HOPE Now at the Rabobank Arena.  This was an opportunity for hundreds of borrowers at risk of home foreclosure to meet face-to-face with national lenders.

• Faith In Action leaders and clergy conducted over 1,200 health insurance surveys of Kern County families, discovering the many families are either uninsured or under insured when confronting significant health issues.  These surveys give a sense of urgency to the current campaign calling on Congress to adopt Health Insurance reform with strong Family Affordability standards.
